Position: Director of Communications (Based in Chiang Mai, Thailand)
The Director of Communications of the United Board provides strategic leadership and oversight for all aspects of the United Board’s communications, publications, and branding initiatives. Based in the Chiang Mai, Thailand office and reporting to the President, the position supports the organization’s mission to advance Christian higher education in Asia by shaping and managing its external and internal communications, ensuring consistent messaging, and strengthening engagement with the United Board’s diverse constituencies, including partner institutions, donors, trustees, and staff across its offices in Asia and the US.

Key Responsibilities
Publications
- Lead the planning, content development, and production of Horizons, the United Board’s biannual printed magazine, and the e-newsletter issued twice annually.
- Develop storylines, report on programs, and conduct interviews with scholars, donors, and partners.
- Ensure editorial quality, design consistency, and adherence to organizational messaging and brand standards for regular and special-purpose publications.
Digital Communications
- Oversee the content, structure, and design of the United Board website; ensure timely updates and relevance of materials.
- Plan and coordinate social media content across platforms, working with colleagues from various teams and offices to highlight events, partnerships, and achievements.
- Monitor digital engagement and recommend strategies to expand reach and strengthen the United Board’s online presence.
Organizational Communications
- Prepare, edit, and coordinate internal reports, including the President’s bimonthly newsletter to the Board of Trustees.
- Support the President in drafting correspondence, speeches, and other communications with internal and external stakeholders.
- Provide secretarial and drafting support for committees, ensuring high-quality meeting minutes and accurate documentation, as well as for other teams in their communication with their stakeholders as needed.
Strategic Plan Implementation
- Support the implementation of the Strategic Plan 2026–2031, with particular attention to subgoal 5.4 related to the amplification of organizational messages through effective storytelling.
- Lead efforts to position the United Board as a thought leader in Christian higher education by curating and disseminating insights from programs, partners, and networks.
- Develop strategies and initiatives that strengthen the organization’s profile among higher education institutions, faith-based networks, and philanthropic partners.
Brand Stewardship and Advisory
- Serve as custodian of the United Board’s brand identity and communications standards.
- Develop and disseminate branding and visual and editorial style guides, ensuring consistent representation of the organization’s image and values.
- Advise colleagues across offices on best practices in messaging, presentation, and donor/community communications.
Team Leadership and Supervision
- Supervise and mentor communications staff members and liaise with service providers for website, design, editorial and other support.
- Foster cross-office collaboration and strengthen staff capacity in communications and public engagement.
- Work closely with program, development, and administrative teams to align communications strategies with organizational goals.

Qualifications and Experiences:
The United Board seeks a seasoned and thoughtful communications professional who is passionate about advancing higher education and is able to translate complex ideas into clear, compelling narratives across diverse audiences and cultural contexts.
Education and Professional Experience
- An advanced degree in communications, journalism, marketing, public relations, or a related field is preferred.
- A minimum of 10 years of experience in communications, including leadership roles with oversight of publications, digital platforms, and organizational messaging.
- Experience in the nonprofit, higher education, or international development sector is highly desirable.
Digital and Media Skills
- Solid experience in website management, social media strategy, and digital content planning.
- Familiarity with analytics tools and the ability to assess engagement and adjust strategies accordingly.
- Working knowledge of design and content management systems; familiarity with multimedia content (e.g., video, photography) is an advantage.
Organizational and Stakeholder Engagement
- Excellent writing, editing, and presentation skills in English, with the ability to adapt tone and messaging for different audiences.
- Experience supporting senior leadership with speeches, reports, and high-level correspondence.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively across teams, offices, and cultures.
Leadership and Management
- Demonstrated experience in supervising and mentoring staff, as well as managing external vendors and consultants.
- Ability to lead projects, manage multiple priorities, and deliver high-quality outputs within deadlines.
- A collaborative and service-oriented leadership style, with a commitment to building team capacity.
Personal Attributes and Values
- A strong alignment with the mission and values of the United Board.
- Cultural sensitivity and experience working in or with Asia’s diverse higher education contexts.
- Sound judgment, discretion, and the ability to handle sensitive information with professionalism.

- Willingness to be based in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and to travel to the United States and across Asia to any country represented in our network is required.
