Board Briefs

Dear Trustees,

The spring season has brought a flourish of activities across our United Board community, reflecting our shared commitment to Whole Person Education across Asia. As we prepare for our upcoming study trip and Board Meeting in Thailand, I am delighted to share highlights of our work and the inspiring efforts of our team and partners over recent months.

Our strategic planning process, launched with the guidance of Nygren Consulting, continues to bring clarity and momentum to our work. Thanks to your steadfast support, we have successfully completed the outreach and data collection phase. The key themes emerging from this work, together with the consultants’ insights and analysis, will shape the foundation for our discussions in Thailand. On behalf of the Strategic Planning Steering Task Force, I thank you for your support of this important process.

I am also pleased to report a significant milestone in expanding our regional presence: the establishment of a new office in Chiang Mai, Thailand. In late March, I traveled to Chiang Mai to sign the formal documents initiating our registration as a foreign nonprofit. In April, Ricky met with local designers to begin planning the layout of the new office. I look forward to welcoming you in June for a visit to the site where our new regional office will be built.

The Asian Academy for Campus Ministry (AACM) 2025, held at Hong Kong Baptist University, marked a significant step in our efforts to support mental health and mentoring on campuses. Thirty educators and campus ministers from 12 countries gathered and engaged in drama therapy, collaborative workshops, and cross-cultural exchanges. The ripple effects of these experiences will certainly strengthen resilience, compassion, and healing on campuses throughout Asia.

Our global partnerships continue to deepen. I had the privilege of visiting Macquarie University in Australia, where we explored opportunities for deeper collaboration for the faculty scholar programs and other emerging areas. The warm reception we received and the fruitful discussions we had with university leadership confirmed the value of our relationships across continents.

We are also taking steps to support emerging institutions in underserved regions. The recent needs assessment visit to Timor-Leste, led by Cynthia and colleagues from Sanata Dharma University, provided valuable insights into six Christian institutions, many newly established and facing significant challenges in infrastructure and training. Their findings will guide our efforts to provide meaningful assistance to these and other institutions.

I am especially proud of our continuing investment in staff development. The recent training sessions in Chennai brought together new colleagues from our three offices, reflecting our belief that organizational development begins with personal growth. We are also delighted to welcome Jerusha Alice J. to our Chennai consultancy office, where her leadership will enhance our programming across Asia.

As we prepare for our upcoming study trip and Board Meeting in Thailand, I am filled with gratitude for your continued guidance, wisdom, and support. This gathering will provide opportunities for us to reflect together, celebrate our achievements, address challenges, and chart a course forward in service of Christian higher education across Asia.

With deepest appreciation,

A Needs Assessment Visit to Timor-Leste

To better understand the needs of Christian higher education institutions in Timor-Leste and explore ways to support them, Cynthia—accompanied by Dr. Ouda Teda Ena, Dr. Made Frida Yulia, and Mr. Thomas Wahyu Prabowo Mukti from the English Institute of Sanata Dharma University—visited six institutions in mid-April. These institutions, many of which have been established within the past five years, are operated by the Catholic Diocese of Dili and other religious orders in Timor-Leste....Read more

“Individuals need a learning atmosphere where a person is challenged and accompanied to be meaningful contributors to society. This learning space has its own charisma—a perspective of openness, trust, vigour and passion. Such a space in an organization gives its team members potential—to be greater versions of themselves and to be true to their calling.

“This is how I have come to look at the United Board. From the top leadership to my team, each person has helped me in this process of being rejuvenated and rediscovering myself and my potential to better understand and serve the cause of Christian higher education in Asia.

“The recently concluded staff development workshop facilitated by the Open Consulting team opened an opportunity for me to look within, to reach out to new friends and colleagues and also focus on our strengths as persons and as a part of the United Board team. We had the opportunity to reflect on the power of purpose-driven meaningful conversations in our work.

“This is an organization that truly believes that the development of its staff is a vital component of organizational development. Each of us is proud to be associated with a people-centered organization which truly works towards whole person development—of its staff, its partner institutions and the student population we indirectly serve in Asia.”

“The sessions with Open Consulting for the United Board staff focused primarily on fostering interpersonal and professional relationships, as well as providing an opportunity for self-reflection within the context of a team. The participatory and interactive approach employed by the trainers facilitated a free and open dialogue among us, allowing me to revisit my own personal and professional purpose. The sessions were insightful and enriching, with real-world applications during the practical sessions proving to be particularly useful. These applications contributed significantly to my understanding of my own strengths.

“Moreover, our shared experiences during the sessions helped us to better understand each other’s strengths, which I believe will bring fresh perspectives and new possibilities for the United Board’s future directions. I deeply appreciate the trainers' expertise and thank them for their efforts in making the sessions both informative and engaging. This opportunity has reinforced my convictions to be an integral part of the United Board's vision and mission.”
